About the documentary

Earth Moon Earth is a posthumous short film tribute by Dr. Katz's eldest daughter. Dr. Katz, K2UYH, was among the first to bounce radio signals off the moon and back to earth, allowing people around the world to communicate with each other without the use of phones or internet connections. Through archival footage of his ham radio shack, interviews with fellow operators, and the dits and dahs of morse code, the film shows how how one engineer's fascination with the sky paved the way for a global community of ham radio operators. It is equal parts love letter, expression of grief, and a celebration of a life well lived.

Director's Statement

Alisha Hastings-Kimball on set

“He held world’s records. He earned 17 patents. He was a professor for over 50 years, an IEEE fellow, and the founder of both the EME Newsletter and the Semi-Annual EME Conference, bringing together a global community of people who shared his passion. To the people in this film, he was simply K2UYH, and to me, he was Dad, a man who believed that science was joyful and that the moon was never too far away.”

Alisha Hastings-Kimball has been creating art all her life. She always wanted to make a movie about her dad. His unfortunate passing in 2024, weeks away from the annual EME Conference,  pushed that desire to the forefront. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art Therapy and a Master of Arts in Teaching from The College of New Jersey, where her father taught for more than 50 years. As a first-time filmmaker, the collaboration with the core production team has been a wonderful experience that has sparked her interest in continuing to explore the filmmaking medium.
